TheCommuneandSangkatCouncilshaveboththepowerofdecision-makingandappointment,decidingmattersbyasimplemajorityanddirectlyappointingvillageleaders.Therefore,majorCambodianpoliticalpartiesvaluecommuneelectionsasmuchasgeneralelectionsandtheirperformanceistakenasabarometerforthenextyear'snationalassemblyelections.?9yJ我酷网

Thefinalresultofthe2017communeelectionswillnotbereleaseduntilSunday.TheNationalElectionCommitteeofCambodia,however,announcedthepreliminaryresultonJune4,showingthattherulingCambodianPeople'sParty(CPP)won1,163seatsoutof1,646,70percentoftheseats.Thebiggestoppositionparty,theCambodiaNationalRescueParty(CNRP),won482withabout30percentoftheseats.OneseatwenttotheKhmerNationalUnityParty.?9yJ我酷网

ItisevidentthattheCPPledbycurrentPrimeMinisterHunSenhas"won"theelectionsandtheCNRP's"failure"isobvious.HunSennotedinawrittenspeechwithinthepartythattheCPPwonmanymorevotesthanin2013,soithaswonthecommuneelectionsandHunSenexpressedconfidenceofkeepingpowerinnextyear'sgeneralelection.?9yJ我酷网

Incontrastwiththesehigh-soundingwords,theCNRPspokespersonadmittedtheparty'sfailureintheelection.However,itcanbearemarkablevictoryfortheCNRPconsideringitssignificantlyimprovedperformance.?9yJ我酷网

The"win-win"situationenablestheCPPandtheCNRPtocompetepeacefullythroughelectionsundertheexistingpoliticalframework,whichobviouslyisgoodforthepeople.Afterall,"civilwar,"asHunSenwarnedof,andstreetprotests,whichwereoftenstagedbytheCNRP,wouldbeadisasterforeconomicandsocialdevelopment.?9yJ我酷网
