RadarThe word "Radar" comes from the words "radio detecting and ranging". This really means finding out the presence of objects and measuring their distance by means of radio waves.
To understand how radar works, let's compare it to a flashlight. Suppose you're in a dark place and you switch on a flashlight. The light waves from your flashlight travel in a beam in the direction in which you point the flashlight. In less than one millionth of a second, the light strikes a nearby tree and is reflected back. It reaches your eye and you can see the tree. But other trees that are not struck by the beam of light cannot be seen.
Radar works in much the same way. Instead of light waves a kind of radio wave is used. The main difference between them is the size. For radar, waves a few inches longer are used.
Since radar waves differ in size from light waves, they act in a different way. For instance, they can easily go through nearby clouds, while light waves can not. The human eye notices light waves, but radio waves cannot be seen, felt or heard by a human being without special equipment. Scientists have learned how to find out these radio waves.The radar waves are concentrated into a beam just as light waves are in a flashlight, and they are sent out in a certain direction. They strike an object and are reflected back. So the first thing radar tells us is that some object, such as a ship or a plane, has been reached by the radar wave. By moving the radar beam around slowly in a circle, we can explore the surroundings.
